Leveraging pricing and payment models to enable equitable access to health innovation

Cosa trovi nel programma

Health systems today face growing challenges in ensuring timely and equitable access to innovative health technologies while maintaining financial sustainability. This is especially evident with the increasing availability of high-cost medicines, such as gene and cell therapies, often launched with limited clinical evidence and high uncertainty regarding their realworld effectiveness and budgetary impact. In this context, pricing and payment schemes have been proposed as practical tools to address these challenges. As a result, pricing and reimbursement decisions are becoming more complex, as traditional models struggle to accommodate innovative technologies with unique characteristics and novel modalities of care and delivery.

This course responds to a concrete and timely need: helping professionals understand how pricing and payment mechanisms are currently leveraged, or can be strategically deployed, to balance access to innovation with affordability of the healthcare systems in the European Union.

Drawing on cutting-edge research outputs conducted within European Commission-funded research framework, specific tools, real-world cases and policy implications, the course will provide participants with comprehensive insights on different types of pricing and payment schemes for pharmaceuticals and medical devices (including annuitybased models for ATMPs, outcome-based agreements, subscription models for antibiotics, indication-based pricing for multi-use drugs), and on how to identify the most appropriate pricing models given specific objectives or needs.

Who should apply

The program is aimed at professionals working at the interface of pricing and market access of health technologies, particularly those involved in pricing negotiations or the preparation of value dossiers. It is designed for individuals seeking to build a solid, crosscutting perspective that integrates regulatory and evaluative dimensions.

More specifically, the program addresses the needs of practitioners and industry professionals engaged in the market access of pharmaceuticals and medical devices. It is relevant both for professionals in managerial roles and for those without formal managerial responsibilities who are involved in—or wish to gain a deeper understanding of—the dynamics of pricing and reimbursement of health technologies.

Program Direction

“Pricing and payment models can be effective tools to address the challenges of an evolving healthcare ecosystem, facing growing needs, high pace of innovation, and limited resources. If the right scheme is chosen, patients can gain access to new treatments quicker than they otherwise might, manufacturers can secure early market access for products, while the financial risk to payers is mitigated.”
