Do you own an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle and find yourself constantly annoyed by charging stations occupied by cars that aren’t actually charging? “You’re in good company,” says Armando Cirrincione from the mobiUs Lab in this podcast (in Italian), which explores the charging behaviors of young people (Gen Z and Millennials) in Europe and Asia. The habit of occupying a charging station without actually using it is widespread across the globe, with lower rates only in France and Germany.
By surveying 6,600 young individuals in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, China and India, the mobiUs Lab—dedicated to analyzing sustainable mobility behaviors among the new generations—also found that using charging spots simply to park closer to one’s destination is another common practice.
In general, Cirrincione notes, less than 50% of charging happens at public stations. Home charging is more common everywhere, especially overnight.
The option to charge at work or access to shared residential charging points (already more common in Germany) could help boost EV adoption. But varying cultures, lifestyles, and infrastructure setups lead to intriguing geographical differences and open up unexpected business opportunities. Tune into the podcast to learn more.
