I principi di base del Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), le fasi del ciclo di vita e l’impatto di un processo o di un prodotto.
Can the world afford to throw away $200 billion a year? And can entrepreneurs ignore a market worth $200 billion a year? If you think the answer is no, you might be interested in reading La catena di smontaggio. La rivoluzione dell’economia dei materiali (The disassembly line: The revolution of the material economy, in Italian) by Davide Reina (EGEA, 2025, Preface by Massimo Sideri, Postscript by Luigi Ruggerone).
Every year, 2.1 billion tons end up in landfills, with minimal recycling. To meet the material demands of a population expected to reach 10 billion, a disassembly line capable of recycling most of our waste will need to be added to the assembly line.
What Professor Reina calls dirtynomics is the economy focused on recycling and valorizing waste materials. This economy is growing rapidly and is set to become central, although it remains largely invisible due to the perception of waste as “ugly” and costly, while it actually represents a formidable opportunity and source of value.
The enormous potential of dirtynomics is evident when considering two key data points: global material demand has quadrupled in the last fifty years, exceeding 100 billion tons per year. Meanwhile, our circularity performance has worsened: from 9.1% in 2018, we fell to 7.3% in 2023 for recycled materials. This means that over 90% ends up in landfills or incinerated.
The technologies and capital needed to achieve this transformation exist. The main obstacle is a change in mindset, Professor Reina asserts, even from public institutions, which should reward virtuous behavior rather than just punish the vicious.
An environmental scorecard to evaluate circularity in real-time and the use of big data and AI for circularity are some of the ideas the author suggests if we want to realize the promise of a fully circular ecosystem.
DAVIDE REINA is a business economist who has been working at the intersection of strategy, innovation, and circularity for over twenty years. He is an Associate Professor of Practice at SDA Bocconi School of Management and Managing Partner of a strategic consulting firm.
