What global leaders are made of

Over the past decade, the whole context of global business has undergone a profound transformation. The challenges facing society have become more urgent, and technology has driven ever-greater global interconnectivity. Political polarization, populism, and stereotyped views of other cultures have increasingly obstructed global collaboration, making the achievement of diversity and inclusion indispensable. All these factors have significantly compounded the complexity that global leaders are facing.

Bettina Gehrke, a Fellow of the Leadership knowledge group at SDA Bocconi School of Management, is one of the editors of Global Leadership Practices. Competencies for Navigating in a Complex World with her colleagues, faculty members of CEMS, the Global Alliance in Management Education whose partners include 33 business schools across the world, multinational companies, and NGOs.

The book addresses the new reality facing future leaders who want to understand the challenges of our time. The text contains multiple theoretical approaches and tools designed to help the reader respond to this “new normal.” The first part of the book deals with conceptual knowledge and learning tools, with exercises that stimulate the reader to delve into self-reflection and recognize how to develop competencies that lead to global collaboration.

The second part offers deep insights into how global leadership is practiced in specific countries and regions: China, Ecuador, India, Kazakhstan, the Middle East and North Africa, Southeast Asia, and Southern Africa. Spanning cultures, industries, and geographies, case studies explore some of the most topical issues of our day: cross-cultural realities, the legacy of colonialism, diversity, and inclusion, and indigenous knowledge.

As the editors write, “Our aim in designing this book is to prepare global citizens who will contribute to a more open, sustainable, and inclusive world, as stated in the CEMS’ values.”.
