Sturzenegger, lessons in "experienced" macroeconomics

From an unusual vision of banks as “time-producing machines” to the myth of Icarus as a parable of the risks of success, both in macroeconomics and in the private life. From a passionate defense of floating exchange rates to the importance of petrol stations in the middle of the pampas. This and more in Federico Sturzenegger’s presentation for the MBA’s Economic Scenarios. An economist and former Governor of the Central Bank of Argentina, Sturzenegger outlined an adventurous and instructive journey through topics, places, and events within and beyond the borders of his country that have marked (and changed) the course of the world’s economy over the past 40 years.

The title of the presentation was “Some Lessons in the Life of Macroeconomics”, and Sturzenegger’s lessons have solid foundations in his career: he started in academia, then moved on to the oil industry, and reached the top management of one of the most important public banks in his country, the Banco Ciudad de Buenos Aires; he was then elected Member of Parliament and finally directed the Central Bank of Argentina. He has played many a role in the service of his country, during which he had to face the peaks of the economic crisis and fought to overcome them. An experience that today makes him say: “It’s not what you fail at, but what you learn”.
