Valter Lazzari is Affiliate Professor of Banking and Insurance at SDA Bocconi School of Management. He is also Professor of Banking and Finance at LIUC - Università Cattaneo in Castellanza (Varese, Italy).
At SDA Bocconi, he held the position of Director of the MBA Full-Time Program from 2004 to 2011 and he was a member of the Research Committee from 1996 to 2001. He carried research projects concerning the corporate banking services for small and medium enterprises; the performance analysis of mutual funds; the management and governance of financial institutions; the structure of the securities industry, particularly of the equity markets. On these topics, he has also been developing an extensive experience in designing and conducting executive training projects.
His research now focuses on the issues of corporate governance, management of banks and investment companies, financial regulation and supervision, equity markets, asset management and financial risk management. He is currently working on the calendar and geographical effects on equity trading; the regulation and supervision of banks; the corporate governance and institutional forms of banks.
He authored several scholarly works published in refereed academic journals (Financial Management Journal, Economic Notes, European Business Forum, Banca Impresa e Società) and books. He also authored, or edited, books concerning cross border sovereign financing; the hedge fund industry; the structure of the European securities Industry; the relationship between banks and non-financial corporations. In the academic and research field, at Università cattaneo – LIUC he served as Rector and, previously, as Dean of the Business School. He was also an associate editor of the Journal of Management and Governance and of the European Business Forum; a member of the Scientific Committee of the Institute of Economic Research of the Lombardy Region (IReR); a Visiting Professor of Finance at the University of Lugano (CH) and a lecturer at the University of Washington, Seattle WA, USA. He won a Research Prize awarded by Bocconi University and he earned the recognition of outstanding teacher of the year several times. In terms of corporate practice, he has been serving as independent director for more than a decade in several financial institutions: a major listed Italian bank, three asset management companies, which are part of domestic and international financial conglomerates, a real estate management company and a rating agency. In most of these experiences, he also served as either the Chair or a member of Audit Committees. In one instance, he was also a member of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee. He has been developing an even longer experience as an independent member of Investment and Asset Allocation Committees in hedge funds, private equity funds and private wealth management companies.
Valter graduated cum laude in Economics (1987) from Bocconi University and earned both a M.Sc. (1990) and a Ph.D. (1993) in Economics from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA.
