Twenty years of EMMS: a community looking ahead

Twenty years ago, the Executive Master in Marketing & Sales (EMMS) was created around an idea that was ahead of its time: marketing and sales could no longer be treated as separate disciplines. Creating value for customers required strategic alignment, shared vision and integrated leadership.
Two decades later, that intuition has become standard practice. Yet the context in which marketing and sales leaders operate has changed dramatically once again.
This year's discussions reflected the challenges shaping the next chapter of the profession. Faculty and guest speakers explored provocative questions around artificial intelligence, strategic decision-making, customer behavior and organizational transformation. Rather than offering definitive answers, the conversations invited participants to question long-held assumptions and reflect on the balance between human judgment and technological acceleration in an increasingly complex business environment.
Equally important were the conversations happening outside the sessions. Alumni from different generations of the program shared experiences, compared how their industries have evolved and reflected on how many of the relationships built during EMMS continue to shape their professional journeys years after graduation.
Artificial intelligence, data-driven decision making, new customer expectations and rapidly evolving business models are reshaping the profession at unprecedented speed. Bringing together alumni, faculty and industry leaders to celebrate twenty years of EMMS therefore meant more than looking back at the program's history. It became an opportunity to ask what comes next—and to reaffirm the value of a community that continues to learn alongside the evolution of business.
The program's own history reflects this mindset of continuous evolution. Originally launched through the collaboration between SDA Bocconi, Esade and Cornell University, and now delivered jointly by SDA Bocconi and Esade, EMMS has continuously adapted to the changing realities of marketing, sales and executive education, while remaining true to its founding purpose: preparing leaders able to integrate commercial vision, customer understanding and business strategy.
These are perhaps the program's greatest strengths. Executive education is not only about acquiring new knowledge at a specific moment in time. It is about becoming part of a community that continues to exchange ideas, challenge perspectives and learn together as business evolves.
Looking back over twenty years highlighted how profoundly marketing and sales have changed. Looking ahead confirmed why the EMMS community continues to matter: great programs do not simply prepare professionals for today's challenges, they build communities ready for tomorrow's.
