The Digital Upskilling program delivered by SDA Bocconi School of Management in collaboration with Intellera Consulting for Regione Lombardia has recently come to a close. The initiative marked a major training effort focused on digital health and the redesign of healthcare services.

Running from September through March, the program was implemented on a large scale, with more than 200 training days delivered and over 2,000 professionals involved, including top management, hospital department directors, community care professionals, pharmacists, and affiliated healthcare staff. This broad-based effort helped spread key capabilities and foster a shared language around innovation across the regional healthcare system.

The program explored the main trends shaping healthcare digitalization, with a particular focus on the Electronic Health Record 2.0, telemedicine, and service management and service redesign tools. Through lectures, applied case discussions, and workshops, participants were able to engage with innovative organizational models and develop concrete proposals to improve the effectiveness and integration of services.

One of the program’s defining features was its managerial and system-wide approach, which moved beyond a purely technological view of digitalization and positioned it as a strategic lever for generating tangible impact on care pathways and service organization. The exchange among professionals from different settings also encouraged the sharing of experiences and the development of cross-cutting initiatives.

The program marks a key step in the transformation of Lombardy’s healthcare system. With capabilities and awareness now more widely established, the focus shifts to implementation, with the goal of turning the opportunities offered by digital into tangible improvements for both patients and healthcare professionals.

The initiative, coordinated by Francesco Longo, Paola Roberta Boscolo, and Marco Sartirana, involved more than 20 SDA Bocconi faculty members with expertise in digitalization, service redesign, organization, and change management in healthcare.
