Nico Abbatemarco, Leonardo De Rossi and Gianluca Salviotti from SDA Bocconi’s DEVO Lab won the award "Move the Field Forward - Best Paper", a joint initiative from the Center for Business Analytics (CBA) at the Milgard School of Business, the International Society of Service Innovation Professionals (ISSIP), and IBM.

The award was bestowed at the 51st edition of the Hawaiian International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), one of the most important conferences in the field of information systems, held 3 – 6 January 2018, with over 4000 attendees from over 78 different countries.

As G. Salviotti noted: “This recognition from CBA, ISSIP and IBM honors work that demonstrates the concrete collaboration among students, the academic world, and the business community to push knowledge forward on specific topics.”

G. Salviotti, L. De Rossi and N. Abbatemarco presented the research paper "A Structured Framework to Assess the Business Application Landscape of Blockchain Technologies", a project carried out within the frame of a wider research realized by the DEVO Lab in 2017 "Exploiting Blockchain: Technical Overview, Application Landscape and Business Implications". In their project the DEVO Lab researchers analyzed literature on building an analysis tool for possible corporate applications of the blockchain technology, which has become popular in connection with the world of crypto-currencies and the Bitcoin project. The authors then applied their framework to analyze 460 blockchain projects.

N. Abbatemarco explained: "The information gathered in this investigation has to do mainly with assessing some key characteristics of this new technology: the potential field of application (carried-out task, field, industry), market capitalization, main development platforms, and consent mechanisms used”.

"While confirming that the prevalent field of application for blockchains today is that of crypto-currencies based on public (or permissionless) platforms,” concludes L. De Rossi, “we have observed a series of emerging areas of application, such as financial transactions, development of derivative applications (the so-called DApps), certifications”.
