The appointment of the new Rector, approved unanimously today by the University Board, was proposed by President Mario Monti after deep consultation with the Faculty, starting with the members of the Academic Council. The Rector’s term lasts two years.

His research is focused on understanding the dynamics of innovation and the impact of technology in corporate and business strategies.

"The thanks of the Board and the entire Bocconi community go to Andrea Sironi for his commitment and the results achieved during his four years in office," said Monti. "Internationalization, social mobility, innovation and teaching quality are the areas on which he concentrated his efforts, helping to bring the University to the top of the most important international rankings. With the new academic year, the torch passes to Gianmario Verona, whom I thank for the dedication he has shown as Dean and Program Director. I wish him all the best for a successful rectorship."

According to the mandate established by the Board in line with the University's strategic plan, Bocconi2020, the new Rector will focus on the continued strengthening of Bocconi’s international profile in terms of recruitment of students and faculty on the international market, visibility and productivity of research, and the positioning of Bocconi departments at a European level.

"I would like first to give my heartfelt thanks to President Monti and to the Board members for the confidence they have expressed in me," said Verona. "To succeed Andrea Sironi, under whom I am Dean, is an honor and an incentive to pursue the objectives of the Bocconi2020 plan with the same commitment and dedication, knowing that I can count on the full cooperation of the teaching staff, administrative staff, students and alumni."

As part of an ever-increasing internationalization of the University, President Monti also announced that Francesco Giavazzi, Professor of Economics at Bocconi University and a regular visiting professor at MIT, has been appointed Vice Chairman of the International Advisory Council (IAC).  This body consists of international figures from the world of business and higher education, and assists the Board in strategic planning at European and global levels.
