There is no doubt that stress helps to keep us alert, providing us with some of the energy required to maintain an interest in our environment, to explore it and adapt to it. However, when stress becomes intolerable (when we are asked to stretch beyond our limits of elasticity) it becomes positively harmful and can lead to burnout.
In crisis time - when competition on the market puts everyone in a company under strain and stress - we sometimes are not aware of the very high cost of stress and burnout, individually and organizationally. We procrastinate dealing with the visible consequences of stress, demotivation, decline in performance, and serious health problems. Recognizing stress symptoms on the work place in time and knowing how to manage the changes which occur as a result of stress, we can avoid the high organizational costs of this hidden enemy: performance decline, lost working hours, mistakes and wrong decisions, a damaged company image and a negative organizational climate.

Frank Th. Petermann, lawyer and secretary general of the association Swiss Burnout, expert in consulting companies with serious stress and burnout problems. Swiss Burnout is a dialogue and communication platform that allows companies to obtain and exchange information on burnout. Swiss Burnout aims at encouraging prevention and scientific research, and strives to help people suffering from this syndrome.
