Visa, Permit to Stay and Health Insurance

Do I need a visa to enter Italy as a student?

If you are from a non-EU country, you must obtain a student visa to enter Italy, applying to the Italian Consulate / Embassy in your country.

What is the Permit to Stay?

The Permit to Stay (Permesso di soggiorno) is an endorsement granted by authorities that allows you to reside, work or study in Italy for more than 90 days and must be obtained by all non-EU citizens. You must apply within the first 8 days after your arrival in Italy.

And what about health insurance?

Medical care in Italy is completely free. In order to legally reside in Italy and to obtain your Permit to Stay, you have to register with the National Health Service; otherwise a minimum health insurance coverage is required.
